Young Rukai Woman

Tseng Hsiao-Te (1952-)

Oil Painting

1990

Length:64.5 x Width:53 (cm)

Young Rukai Woman is a half-length portrait by Tseng, painted in 1990, at the age of 38. The subject appears to look straight ahead in a steady gaze, as if time is standing still. In this painting, there is a single focal point of light with the light source above and to the left of the subject. The colors emphasize the variations in light and shadow and the interwoven layers preserve their fluidity. This artist uses detailed and heavy strokes, similar to a sculptor, re-creating the satiny skin of this young girl.
Tseng has great respect for Taiwan's indigenous culture and spirit. He has said that through his works he presents topics related to Taiwan's native consciousness. Indigenous peoples and cultures are most representative of this consciousness.
