It is possible to see Chang’s strong foundation in sketching. This work is vivid and lifelike and the pose natural. The lines are clean and well-executed. The facial features are well defined and there is a simple and natural feel to this work. Most of Chang's works were oil paintings of landscapes or still life. This is a rare example of a portrait.
In the early years of his art career, Chang struggled to survive. But, this helped to discipline him and forge a fighting spirit. He traveled around, painting on the street and portraits as ways to earn a living. This is an example of his exquisite style that emerged in his early days.
