Harvesting the Field

Tzeng Maw-Hwang (1934-)

Oil Painting

1996

Length:22 x Width:27 (cm)

Tzeng completed this work at the age of 63. In the distance the horizon appears white and there are indigo mountains. Next to a three-sided compound home, farmers are working hard to gather the harvest. In the foreground are bundles of rice straw. This is a traditional farm scene in Taiwan. The painter described this scene from a distant perspective, as if explaining a song of the countryside and presenting his love for this land.
The Hakka people are known for their industrious nature. Tzeng grew up in a poor family, which helped to shape his determination. Due to his strong foundation in painting, in terms of composition and use of colors he is well able to express warmth and nostalgia.
