Wang Shui-King (1918-1985)
Oil Painting
1945
Length:31.5 x Width:41 (cm)
In 1940s Taiwan, the economy was beginning to undergo transformation from agriculture-based to industry-based. Taipei Bridge Over Tamsui River was completed by Wang at the age of 27. It depicts the smokestacks in the Sanchong area along the Tamsui River. Junks dot the river and green grass grows along the banks. This artist made use of exquisite and classical brushstrokes and warm, yellow hues as the background colors. The contours appear a bit hazy as the sun sets over the river. This painting brings viewers to a simpler time.
The composition of this painting is tight with saturated color. It depicts the landscape of early Sanchong and Dadaocheng Harbor. It is as if revisiting 1930s or 1940s riverside Taipei.
