Preparing the Soil

Shih Vince(1947-)

Oil Painting

1980

Length:72 x Width:100 (cm)

This painting, Preparing the Soil, is one of his early representative landscape paintings of Taiwan. Members of a farming family work under the strong sunlight to turn over the soil that has been baked dry in the heat. Dried grasses have been collected in small mounds to be burned. The ashes are then used to fertilize the soil to provide nutrients for the next season's crop. The reddish orange soil creates a stark contrast with the surronding greenery. The sky is mostly clear and strong sunlight heats the air. The ability of these farmers to toil in the heat is admirable
