Liu created this small-sized painting of Black-faced spoonbills. This is a migratory bird which winters in Taiwan. This flock of black-faced spoonbills has gathered just before night falls. There is a cross-shaped composition, with the apex being the setting sun. Viewers' line of sight is drawn to these birds who have come from more northern areas to escape the cold. Although appearing serene, this scene contains the implied meaning of the flock staying together for protection.
This artist once said that, "In my oil paintings, I use the layering techniques of printmaking, which create an interesting effect. Through the exchange of transparent and non-transparent colors, a sense of mystery is produced." Backlighting techniques are used to set off the white feathers of these birds, with front lighting and backlighting reflecting stillness and movement. This is the result of the application of printmaking layering techniques.
