Three Vats

Sheu Keun-Cherng (1946-)

Oil Painting

1982

Length:80.5 x Width:80.5 (cm)

Three aged vats are wrapped in old newspaper, revealing an expectation of the production of fine liquor. From the scattered apples that surround the vats and the checkered tablecloth, we can see this artist's diligence and technique in capturing this realistic scene. This style is referred to as Neorealism (Photorealism). Expression of light source is also used for dramatic effect.
This work, Three Vats, was completed not long after Sheu's return to Taiwan from France. The spatial arrangement, light, shadow and colors reveal this artist's exploration of European and North American Photorealism. The three old Taiwanese vats wrapped in newspaper are a modern art symbol of old wine in new bottles
