This painting depicts two indigenous dancers dressed in splendid attire taking a break between performances. From their brightly colored headdresses, sashes and leggings, they are from the Amis tribe. There is mutual interaction between the woman who is seated and the woman who is standing. One is helping the other to straighten her headdress and one is anticipating the next performance.
foundation of painting since ancient times. Such depictions are charming, but also challenging. This portrayal of two beautiful young women breaks away from the classic beauty of Chinese imperial ladies. The emotions of Nihonga painting are infused into this portrayal of Taiwanese culture.
