Tang Yik-Lung (1964)
Oil Painting
2002
Length:38 x Width:45.5 (cm)
Taipei Botanical Garden was completed by this artist in 2002. The lotus pond is one of the well-known sites of this botanical garden. In summertime, artists and photographers flock here to capture its beauty. This artist is very fond of depicting lotus ponds. But, this work is not done in the simple lines or ink of traditional Chinese paintings. Instead, it is composed purely in the language of oil painting after repeated and determined exploration of spatial depth. It not only presents the details such as the early morning dew, leaves and petals, but also the contrast of the colors of the sky and reflections on the water. The first rays of sunlight are shining on this tranquil, graceful and exuberant lotus pond.
Tang depicts lotus blossoms, which are a favorite subject of ethnic Chinese painters. He creates an inspirational artistic concept to re-interpret this ancient theme.
