Lee Shih-Chiao(1908-1995)
Oil Painting
1978
Length:89.5 x Width:71 (cm)
This painting features his mastery of light and color. The bright green shades of the potted plants catch the eye amid the shadows cast by the tree. The various changes in the reflections along the surface of the goldfish pond are also well depicted. This is complemented by the light red of the background and the orange ground. Lee could tame the intensest of colors and allow them to bring a harmonious tone to his works. His rhythm was quick, clear and transparent.
Over a period of more than 50 years, he tried many different styles and methods, eventually returning to Realism, beginning anew from lighting and colors. He crossed over into the use of Impressionist colors to pursue the natural quality of Realism. He sought colors that were purer and light that was brighter, with space extending across the canvas. His subjects included the human body and still lifes, expanding to include scenes that integrated people and landscapes.
