Jinguashi in the Distance

Li Chuan-Chuan (1942)

Oil Painting

1998

Length:60.5 x Width:72.5 (cm)

In this painting, colors include purplish blue, olive green and yellowish brown. The zigzag formation of the purplish blue hues guides the line of sight toward the distant horizon. Viewers are like travelers as they wind their way among the rows of homes and along the hillsides. The artist presents this romantic scene of Jiufen, using geometric shapes to emphasize the outlines of the buildings, presenting a different kind of landscape painting. Backlighting is used in the near distance and far distance to reveal different layers of light and shadow, enhancing the artistic conception.
During the Japanese occupation era (1895-1945), Jinguashi was a gold mining town. At the height of its prosperity, it was nicknamed "Little Shanghai". Today, Jinguashi is experiencing a revival as a tourist destination. Every weekend, it is crowded with tourists from Taiwan and abroad. This painting appears like a luminescent carpet, with the sunlight spilling onto the mountains, sea and old houses, creating a very thought-provoking scene.
