Lin Yu-Shan(1907-2004)
Ink Painting
Length:61 x Width:39 (cm)
The tiger is shown emerging from bamboo thicket, as it climbs onto a rock. In the upper right corner are white blasts of cold wind, indicating that this is a winter scene, adding another layer to this artistic conception. Lin once noted that tigers are not at the fiercest when their mouths are open and roaring, but rather when they emit low sounds such as growls and chuffs and have a threatening expression.
Lin was born into a family that owned a frame shop in Chiayi. When he was very young, he painted traditional folk paintings with his father. In such works, the tiger symbolized health, prestige and the exorcising of evil spirits. However, this depiction is unique. It not only possesses the traditional implied meaning, but also is highly praised among collectors for its artistic conception and beauty. It fully reveals the vitality of the tiger.
