It features contrasting red and green hues and the strong, carved textures of Huoyanshan (Flame Mountain). It almost seems that there are flames moving upward. The yellow and green hues almost blend into the fields at the foot of the mountain. There is a wide perspective to the whole painting. The red sky and white clouds form a backdrop to the mountain and correspond to the land. Yuan is expressing that Huoyanshan possesses seasonal variations, with differences in light and shadow at different times of the day. Looking at Huoyanshan from different angles, it is difficult to tell its true appearance.
Flame Mountain Under a Red Glow features bright colors and bold brushstrokes. It is representative of the new style of this artist in his later years.
