Colorful Flowers

Shih Tsui-Feng (1925-2018)

Oil Painting

1986

Length:91 x Width:61 (cm)

This painting was completed by the artist at the age of 61. It is an exquisite example of a still life work created in the classical Western painting style. The relatively drab and simple colors of the wall and vase help to set off the brightly colored chrysanthemums. Even the small flowers are an eye-catching flame red. All of the flowers are realistically depicted. Moreover, the maroon color of the vase makes it almost invisible in the shadows. However, it appears stable, even when packed with flowers and leaves, and provides an interesting contrast with the white shell on the table.
From this painting, Shih's sophisticated techniques and ability to harmonize elements can be observed. He portrays a bouquet of flowers that appear so real you can almost smell their fragrance.
