Backstage at a Traditional Chinese Opera

Oil Painting

1997

Length:116.5 x Width:91 (cm)

This artist made use of oil paints and brushes to complete a series of works on folk customs in Taiwan’s rural areas. In this painting is depicted the backstage area of an early traditional Taiwanese opera performance. Bamboo poles prop up the plastic tarp to create a dressing room area for the actors. Under dim lighting, those playing the various roles (referred to as sheng, dan, jing, mo and chou) are helping each other to apply makeup. This is a realistic work that portrays the bustle of activity behind stage and provides viewers with a contrasting view of “glamorous stage life”.
