Kaohsiung Lighthouse

Chen Ruey-Fu(1935)

Oil Painting

1996

Length:73 x Width:60.5 (cm)

This painting, Kaohsiung Lighthouse, was completed by Chen in 1996 at the age of 61This third-class historic monument of Kaohsiung City is also sometimes called the Qijin Lighthouse. The Qing emperor ordered that it be built as early as 1883. However, during the Sino-French War, it was destroyed to prevent French forces from capturing and using it. Due to the expansion of Kaohsiung Harbor, the Japanese, who occupied Taiwan from 1895-1945, built a new lighthouse next to the original. It has undergone restoration several times since the end of World War II. It was built from brick in an octagonal shape and painted white with black circular roof. This is a depiction of the lighthouse at night on the rocky summit of Qijin Mountain, viewed from Xiziwan. The zigzag construction leads viewers deep into the scene. In the dim of night, there are numerous dots of light. Chen used blocks to depict the lighthouse and other buildings. The white multi-storied building on the left is set off from the old homes close to the ground on the left. This enhances the layered effect
From his hometown on the offshore island of Xiaoliuqiu to Kaohsiung Harbor, Chen has focused on seascapes. With his true and earnest personality and painting skills, he hopes to present the most unique natural and cultural beauty of southern Taiwan using his paints and brushes.
