This painting, Watching the Waves, was completed by this artist in 2001 at age 67. The sea is a favorite subject of this artist. In this painting, spray is created as the waves hit against the rocks, presenting a fleeting beauty. On this crisp, autumn day, the sky is clear except for a few light yellow clouds. The large, slanted reef rocks are repeatedly struck by the waves. This is a common scene along Taiwan's northeastern coast.
Wu once said that, “Painting is very simple. It is the product of the artist‘s feelings, impulse and the capturing, grasping and depicting of reality at different times and in different spaces, when faced with different scenes, objects and atmosphere." This type of creative concept allows this artist to present real, rather than illusory, light and colors and to represent the vitality of the ocean.
