Net Fishing

Cheng Ming-Chin (1932-)

Oil Painting

1998

Length:25.5 x Width:17.5 (cm)

This painting, Net Fishing, was completed by the artist in 1998 at the age of 66. The sun is setting in the west over Sun Moon Lake. A fisherman is using a hanging net with four corners to catch fish. This is a traditional fishing method of the indigenous Thao tribe that lives along this lake. In the evening, this net is placed into the water. Lights are used to attract fish. The next day before dawn, the net is taken up to obtain the plentiful catch.
Cheng once said that, "Every day I live, think and play in a picture book world. I am the luckiest person in the world!" Looking at this work, we can feel his childlike enthusiasm and his passion for expressing all that is beautiful in the world.
