Nuptial Chamber was one of her rare masterpieces on the subject of matrimony. It was included in the 10th annual Japan Fine Arts Exhibition. The bride depicted in this painting has a somewhat full figure, reflecting the concept of beauty of that time. She is wearing see-through lingerie, and is seated on the edge of the bed with carved headboard. She appears to be a fashionable, upper class woman. In her right hand is a painted fan. Her left hand is resting on top of a cheongsam (close-fitting Chinese-style dress). The color is elegant, reflecting this subject's taste. She is lightly waving the fan, and appears lost in thought. The lines are exquisite and combined with flat coat and rendered colors. It is almost as if you can feel the warmth and romance in this newlywed couple's bedroom.
Portraits of beautiful women were major subjects of Chen's works. She completed this painting nine years after getting married at the age of 40. Nuptial Chamber portrays the expectation of young women in the early days of Taiwan for a happy marriage and their feeling of contentment.
