Oil Painting
1962
Length:50 x Width:60.5 (cm)
In the foreground of this painting are rows of southern Chinese-style homes with red horseback-shaped roof ridges. In the distance are the Gothic-style towers of the Lukang Folk Arts Museum. There is faint glittering yellow sunlight. This scene is divided into sections based on colors. The white wall color blocks and red tiled roofs are the old homes that reveal the history of this town of Lukang. The natural, unrestrained and well-executed brushstrokes of this artist are also presented.
While at the National Taiwan Normal University, this artist was taught by Liao Chi-Chun and Lee Shih-Chiao. Thus, he developed his oil painting techniques under the tutelage of these two experienced painters. The subjects of his works have included the Lukang Folk Arts Museum, temples, door guardians and fishing boats. Taiwan's folk customs and relevant sites have left a deep impression on Liao. He has also developed a strong foundation in printmaking. In his early works, Liao paid much attention to composition and had an intense style. The effects of interweaving red and white leave a deep impression on those who view his works.
