Beauty Competition Under the Moonlight

Lin Chih-Chu (1917-2008)

Eastern Gouache

Length:51.5 x Width:66.5 (cm)

It shows the night-blooming cereus in full bloom. This is an elegant and attractive painting. Straight lines were used to depict the petals, which differed from the fluid arc lines of his earlier paintings of flowers and plants. The artist made use of somewhat dim colors for the leaves, setting off the bright white blossoms. Black was added between blossoms to allow them to stand out even more. Observe each diamond-shaped petal closely. The lines are exquisite with subtle variation in color. This painting alludes to the cycle of life. Each blossom extends upward, representing the continuation of life.
