Yang Hsing-Sheng (1938-2013)
Oil Painting
1989
Length:31.5 x Width:40.5 (cm)
This work, Orchid Island Shore, was completed by Yang at the age of 51. One wave after another laps onto shore following the tide. The vast blue sea seems to go on forever. In the foreground are beach and large rocks near the shore. You can almost feel yourself standing there, with the sand beneath your feet. This artist was a conscientious observer, expressing the different shades of the ocean from light to dark blue. The faraway light blue sky seems to lengthen the distance with the foreground. This painting provides a look at the pure, natural scenery of Orchid Island, also known as Lanyu.
Yang spent his whole life painting natural and rural landscapes of Taiwan, creating numerous works. In 2008, his solo exhibition, The Beauty of Formosa - Yang Hsing Sheng was held at the Guan Xiang Art Gallery in Taipei. The subject of this particular painting is the seascape of Orchid Island. Although one of the characteristics of Taiwan and its offshore islands, it is the subject of a small number of landscape paintings.
