Spring Awakens in Wulai

Lee Tai Yuan (1949-)

Oil Painting

2009

Length:72.5 x Width:91 (cm)

Although the subject of this painting is the mountains of Wulai, what first catches the eye are the flowers in bloom, which take up about one-third of the foreground, seemingly blending in with the buildings at the foot of the mountain. The bright cherry blossoms are set off against the verdant mountains in the distance. The title of this work, Spring Awakens in Wulai, is very appropriate. Warm and cool hues interweave and overlap, creating rich textures.
Lee creates strong strokes with his palette knives. In this work, oil paint has been thickly smeared, but it still possesses a soft and rhythmic beauty.
