Woman

Pan Chao-Sen(1938-)

Oil Painting

1975

Length:40 x Width:50.5 (cm)

Woman was completed by Pan at the age of 37. It features a deep blue backdrop, creating a sense of gloom that covers everything. Brighter colors were used to embellish the powder white face without a mouth. The eyes are tightly closed and there is only a faint nose bridge on the flat face. Could this be a mask? Could she be a pantomime? No one knows for sure, and perhaps no one is concerned about the answer. If the world is an ocean, people are like driftwood. They can only occasionally lift the blue veil and gaze at the world without expressions on their faces...without sound, only sighs of emotion.
The lack of a mouth symbolizes profound muteness and the feeling of loneliness even in the presence of others. This is a feature of of Pan's works as he matured as an artist. The feelings inspired by his works are always those of quiet and sorrow, like a blues song that seems to repeat over and over in your mind.
