Traditional Taiwanese Opera Performance

Huang Yu-Cheng (1948-)

Oil Painting

2008

Length:60.5 x Width:72.5 (cm)

Influenced by his farmer father who loved to watch traditional Taiwanese opera performances, the subjects of his works are the lives of farmers and fishermen. This painting depicts a rehearsal of a traditional Taiwanese opera. Each person has a face, but there are almost no clear facial features or expressions. The only way they appear different from anyone else are the costumes they are wearing. Although such opera performances are part of Taiwanese culture, they are in danger of disappearing. Support and awareness are needed to preserve this art form.
Huang makes use of rich colors in combination with graceful and restrained lines to present simple beauty. In his works, he reveals the culture of commonplace traditional opera performances in small towns and the esthetics of folk customs.
