Scene From Tashan

Lin Guo-Zhi (1933-2015)

Oil Painting

1961

Length:60.5 x Width:72.5 (cm)

This work was completed by this artist at the age of 27. In the early morning light, the sky appears gray. Little by little the sun comes up, shining on the cracked cliff faces with nearly no vegetation that make up the awe-inspiring Tashan. Only on the top of this mountain are there sparse patches of dark green. This brings to mind an image of a stately elder. At the foot of the mountain are homes of simple colors, nestled close to the rock faces like children. With this mountain watching and guarding over them, the people of this community prepare to start their day.
Lin was captivated by the strong and majestic vitality of Tashan. He was fond of hiking and painting. He once said that, "I like hiking. The mountains are bold and powerful, and strong. Painting is a kind of game. If there is something to paint, you just paint it. That is something that makes me very happy."
