White Roses VI

Chin Jun-Tso(1922-1983)

Oil Painting

1980~1982

Length:50 x Width:60.5 (cm)

There is a pastel green vase and yellowish brown background created with broad brushstrokes. However, the subject is the blue-tinged roses that occupy only about one-fourth of the canvas. The dimness of the black sets off the roses, and also provides a sense of tranquility. This painting was completed by this artist at around the age of 60. It reveals the bleakness of this artist's later years, as well as his persistence.
Chin mainly produced still lifes. His form was calm and reasoned, implying rich meaning and the projection of his emotion. Writer Lee Min-Yung once said, "In between the cracks of his era, Chin's use of dim and gloomy colors tells us that he experienced the difficulties of that time. He used colors to carry out a sincere dialogue with his emotions."
