Hydrangeas of Summer

Chen Yong-Sen (1913-1997)

Eastern Gouache

1960

Length:86 x Width:69 (cm)

In Japanese folk tales, hydrangeas are associated with rain, and are considered mysterious and poignant. Depicted here is Mandala-illustrated vase and thin, tall bottle, as well as puppets in elegant and beautiful lines. They are all Asian cultural items. On the table are displayed summer fruits, with the grapes being the most eye catching. The blue and purple hydrangeas and the blue of the bottle respond to one another creating a triangular loop of blue and purple, enticing viewers to want to enter this magic world.
