Gannets in Springtime

Liu Chi-Wei(1912-2002)

Mixed Media

1998

Length:50 x Width:36 (cm)

Every spring, gannets carry out seasonal migration flying northward. These two gannets are depicted using water color and crayon, appearing somewhat blurred under dim light. The texture is rich and the shapes succinct. This work was created on linen. Although somewhat hazy and dim, it has a youthful feel and brings to mind almost forgotten innocence.
Liu once said that, "When painting, the most important is not technique, but rather how to convey genuineness and emotion." This experimental work that integrates multiple media reveals the affection of these two gannets for each other. This reveals the concept behind this work.
