Scene From Jiufen

Sun Ming-Huang (1938-2019)

Oil Painting

1994

Length:32 x Width:41 (cm)

This scene was painted from the perspective of the hills of Jiufen looking toward Keelung Islet. Deep blue and dark green are the main colors. The sky and sea are of the same colors, creating a sense of vastness. The surface of the sea is calm. The slight haziness represents springtime fog rolling in. In this composition, created from the perspective of standing on the shore and looking into the distance, it seems that the distant space has been extended almost infinitely, revealing the vastness and tolerance of Nature. The emotions of this artist ride the tide and wind to be conveyed over time and space.
Sun completed this work, Scene From Jiufen, at the age of 56. It presents the strong winds characteristic of Taiwan's northeastern coast. Illusion has been infused into this landscape. This artist is fond of plain air painting. Here, he has projected his traveling state of mind onto the canvas, creating his perspective of the northeast monsoon winds.
