Betel Nut Trees of Home

Hsieh Hsiao-De (1940-0)

Watercolor

2000

Length:56 x Width:76 (cm)

This painting, Betel Nut Trees of Home, was completed by this artist in 2000 at the age of 60. Supple, undulating lines were used to create the contours of the mountains. In the middle distance, at the foot of the mountains, is a grove of betel nut trees, standing erect in a straight line, while mountains embrace the land. The white placid surface of the lake lies in contrast to the dark mountains. Almost the entire painting was completed in purple and blue hues. Much of the scene is taken up by the artistic conception of the mountain range in the middle distance. Viewers are sure to become deeply intoxicated by this tranquil scene of nature. The subject of this painting is the grove of betel nut trees. However, in the presence of the towering mountains, they appear insignificant. This artist has left this question for viewers to ponder.
Hsieh is adept at portraying mountain landscapes under fine drizzle or sunlight. The theme of this painting is his hometown and reflects the emotional impressions of his childhood. As a Hakka person from Taoyuan he conveys the appeal of Hakka farming community life through mountain songs and paintings. .
