Su Jen-Ming (1950-)
Oil Painting
2002
Length:90 x Width:85 (cm)
This old tree appears slanted as it stretches upward with a vitality so intense it seems to almost leap out from the canvas. The arc-shaped horizon and branches stretching out on either side correspond with one another. Within the black blue sky are overlapping hues of azure and aqua blue. This is a depiction of a summer night. The leaves of the old tree are dotted in yellow, as if fireflies have landed on them. The artist made use of powerful black contours for this tree, and acrylic paint for the colors. Although this tree has been somewhat distorted in shape by the wind, it still presents a strong vitality.
Taiwanese art historian Lee Chin-Hsien once said that, "Su Jen-Ming's works are like rushing forth into the wilderness, delightful and proud." This painting was completed by Su at the age of 52 upon his return to his hometown. Compared to his earlier works, this painting presents a sense of restlessness. The black lines are powerful and the colors create a simple atmosphere.
