Colorful Clouds Above Fishermen's Wharf

Lee Tai Yuan (1949)

Oil Painting

2013

Length:64.5 x Width:72 (cm)

Fishermen's Wharf and the docked vessels are what first catch the eye. Under a backlit aura, among the dim ocher hues, are reflected blended layers of illumination by the sun's rays. This artist made use of bright colors and flowing palette knife strokes to depict the colorful clouds in the sky. The sea was created by smearing oil paint horizontally. The rays of the setting sun create a yellowish light and the clouds are reflected as flowing blocks of color. At the end of the wharf is a white boat, which provides the finishing touch to this work and implies that the sun is setting as fishermen are returning from a successful day at sea.
Lee has painted landscapes from all over Taiwan. In this work, Colorful Clouds Above Fishermen's Wharf, this artist makes use of his proficiency in oil painting techniques to re-interpret this famous scene of the colors of contemporary Tamsui.
