Purple Roses at Night

Hsiao Fu-Rong (1943)

Oil Painting

2000

Length:53 x Width:45.5 (cm)

Purple roses are beautiful and mysterious, as well as symbols of passionate love. The moon is surrounded by a halo of light. The seas are calm and dark. The rose petals are resplendent and it almost seems possible to breathe in their fragrance. This scene is fascinating. These are set off by the curtains and lace tablecloth, enhancing the romantic atmosphere. It is as if this artist is leading viewers on a slightly intoxicated night filled with purple roses.
This youthful, romantic work was completed by this artist at the age of 66. She has long been obsessed with the delicateness of flowers and the freedom they exhibit when bursting into bloom. She preserves the beauty of flowers on canvas.
