Tainan was one of the earliest areas in Taiwan to be developed and there are many historical sites in this city. In this painting is an example of an elegant structure with white brick walls with three arches. However, the red-tiled roof is already starting to sag. The horseback-shaped ridged eaves in the back are testament to the past prosperity of this area. The withered tree serves as a symbol of change, and there is not much human activity. This artist made use of astringent hues to create this depiction of an old street in Tainan. During the time that this painting was created, the concept of preserving historical sites had not yet caught on in Taiwan. This painting records the previous neglect of historical sites.
In his paintings, Su developed spatial layering and variations in color and light. His compositions are simple yet exacting. His brushstrokes and textures are bold and rough, but also create much charm.
