Scenery of Fengyuan

Liao Chi-Chun(1902-1976)

Oil Painting

1932

Length:24 x Width:33 (cm)

Patches of light blue sky can be seen through the white clouds nestled over the mostly green landscape, bearing down on the buildings and thicket and widening this scene. In the foreground, a tree is enveloped in backlighting, enhancing the elegance of the dim hues. This green landscape and the light blue sky tell of the simple, natural beauty of Fengyuan. Blocklike brushstrokes bring a casual feel, revealing the beauty within this tranquil scene.
Scenery of Fengyuan was completed in 1932, when Liao was 30 years old. This is not only a realistic depiction of this artist's hometown, but also a portrayal of the modern development of Fengyuan of that time, during the Japanese occupation era. Uninhibited brushstrokes and elegant colors were used to create this landscape painting. It is as if ordinary composition was used to create this striking scene, which is casual and exquisite. It reveals the strict upbringing and outstanding ability to express emotions of this artist.
