By the Window

Tzeng Maw-Hwang (1934-)

Oil Painting

1991

Length:50 x Width:60.5 (cm)

Warm and beautiful sunlight peers through the window. On the windowsill are a vase filled with roses and a bamboo basket with oranges. It is as if the sunlight is ready to pass through the frame and illuminate the faces of those who are viewing this scene. Light plays the main role. Backlighting methods were used to emphasize the variations in light and shadow and express ambience. This has the qualities of a Western Impressionist painting, but, at the same time, incorporates the concepts of Zen-like serenity of Eastern cultures.
Backlighting was used in this painting, entitled By the Window. Through gentle brushstrokes, this artist draws light into the room, creating a placid and cozy scene. Following the delicate shifting of shadows, the afternoon sunlight seems to be moving outside the window with each passing second.
