Temple Inner Courtyard

Yang Chi-Tong(1906-2003)

Watercolor

1950

Length:58.5 x Width:74 (cm)

Since ancient times, temples have not only been the most common religious buildings in Taiwan, but also where Taiwanese have entrusted their hopes and wishes.
Sunlight is seen spilling inside. The temple eaves are bright and colorful. This forms a contrast with the dark shadows of the backlit sides. This artist attached importance to variations in color and depicted the resplendent designs of this folk temple in great detail. The women standing along the corridors who have come to worship appear carefree and content. This vividly expresses the intimate interaction between temples and believers.
