Shih completed this painting at the age of 65. Even though the title includes the phrase "at dawn", what first catches the eye is the seascape, which occupies the bottom two-thirds of the scene. Large waves end in white spray as they strike the dark rocks. This creates the effects of movement, shock and vibration.
