Miners

Hung Jui-Lin (1912-1996)

Watercolor

1955

Length:27 x Width:42 (cm)

This charcoal work, Miners, was completed by Hung at the age of 43 in 1955. This artist made use of his longtime mining experience to depict this group of miners using fluid and rough black lines and succinct colors. On the right, several miners are bent over resting their hands on their knees, as if exhausted. On the left, one miner is seated on the ground. The darkness of the mine shaft and the fatigue of the miners reveal Hung's detailed observation of and concern for the common working person.
By the mid-1950s, Hung had accumulated a decade of experience of using miners as his subjects. His works were intermingled with sweat and coal dust. He recorded the life experiences of his coworkers, achieving the ideal of integrating the arts and people.
