A Scene From Tamsui

Ni Chiang-Huai(1894-1943)

Watercolor

1936

Length:49 x Width:66 (cm)

Romantic Tamsui was a common subject among early Taiwanese painters. This work, A Scene From Tamsui, was completed by Ni at the age of 42 in 1936. The artist appears to be overlooking a path leading down into a settlement along the Tamsui River. It disappears as it bends around the homes and buildings. Just where it disappears is the Tamsui Church renovated by George Leslie Mackay. The Tamsui River in the background shows alternating cold and warm hues. This method of composition of dividing the scene into three sections is reminiscent of the style of Ishikawa Kinichiro.
Many artists have depicted the poetic beauty of Tamsui. This one differs in that perspective was used to make it appear as if the road is passing through this scene and heading straight to the water. It bends about one-third of the way in the center of the painting in front of the church. This artist's painstaking effort in creating this scene is clear.
