Meinong Old City Gate Collection Image
Meinong Old City Gate

Kuo Tung-Jung (1927-)

Oil Painting

1990

Length:45 x Width:38 (cm)

The east gate of the once walled section of Meinong was constructed during the 18th century to protect the Hakka residents of Meinong from attacks by other ethnic groups. During the Japanese occupation of Taiwan (1895-1945), it was renovated and then rebuilt by local residents following World War II. Thus, it is not the original. However, when tourists pass this city gate, they can reflect on the memories of the past while enjoying the simple atmosphere of this Hakka community. The old city gate depicted in this painting is located along a roadway and appears tall and imposing. The grayish mountain in the background seems to be a natural defense for this mountain community and in this tranquil scene appears all the more grand.
