Sunset Over Yeyin

Pan Hsiao-Hsia (1954-)

Oil Painting

2013

Length:81.6 x Width:101.4 (cm)

Sunset Over Yeyin depicts a Tao couple standing in a reverent pose as they face the ocean and sunset. It seems to stimulate a hope for the vitality and future of Lanyu (Orchid Island) when the sun comes up again on a new day. The red glow of the sunset creates an atmosphere of pre-storm tension, and the purplish blue sea conjures up a slightly uneasy feel. In the foreground to the left are four traditional fishing boats. Why aren't they in the water? Is this an unconscious depiction of the old saying that a red sky predicts the coming of a typhoon? Of course, this artist is not portraying a typhoon warning. Instead, the meaning behind this painting is the worry regarding the future of Orchid Island's Tao culture and communities
