This artist used overlapping blocks of strong colors to depict this dense collection of buildings. The surrounding mountains create a feeling of vastness. They appear indigo among the dark green shadows cast by the clouds. The use of colors appears free and unrestrained. Amidst the rough brush strokes, it is possible to see harmony. In the center, a patch of light brightens up this scene. This artist made use of detailed observation and sincere emotion to convey his memory of his hometown and to express the purity and charm of this historic hillside town of Jiufen.
