Magpie and Roses

Yang Ching-Chung (1950-0)

Oil Painting

2009

Length:162 x Width:130 (cm)

The artist incorporated a classic dark brown background to draw viewers' attention to the the two main focal points. One is the Taiwan blue magpie flapping its wings in the upper right corner. The other are the pink roses in bloom. The magpie and roses are juxtaposed. This scene would not likely be found in nature. It is as if the artist wanted to arrange a beauty competition between the magpie and the roses.
Yang once said that, "Due to my experience as a painter, in the bottom of my heart, I feel that all things on earth are living. Due to the diversity of subjects available to me, I don't adhere to certain colors, techniques or composition. I don't limit my paintings to that which is within a frame, or to that which is abstract or contemporary or not." In this painting, the artist's exquisite brushstrokes are almost like those of classic Nihonga works. The theme and spatial arrangement were purposefully created, and correspond to this artist's description of his creative style.
