Ink Painting
1998
Length:34.5 x Width:138 (cm)
The Railway Department was established during the Japanese occupation era (1895-1945). In 1908, Taiwan's Western rail line was completed. This department was the predecessor to today's Taiwan Railways Administration. This artist made use of water and ink to realistically depict the grandeur of this imitation Tudor-style red brick building. The moat that was under the archways no longer exists. However, the Chinese cypress wood decor of the entry lobby has been preserved.
There is a banner-like composition to this water and ink painting, Former Railway Department Building. It presents the strength and cultural imagery of this historical building. Through the use of brush and ink the tranquil setting of this building is revealed. At the same time, it has been transformed into a museum which preserves historical records.
