For this depiction of a canal in Venice, Chen used the dotting method to create the bright reflections on the surface of the water and rippling effect. The light on the water is reflected onto the buildings along the canal. The atmosphere of the city seems to be inextricably connected to the unceasing flow of the water. Through the use of perspective the viewer's eye is drawn from near to far. If we continue to move foward the buildings that appear as large dots will gradually become clearer. It is as if enjoying a leisurely stroll in this carefree atmosphere.
A Scene From Venice was completed by Chen at the age of 43. It is an early Impressionist-style painting. Buildings are in opposing positions on both sides of the canal. The light and shadow on the water are from the reflections of the sky above. It is as if the artist was doodling with his brushstrokes. With the masterful combination of a palette knife for thickness, there is intriguing flow in this space.
