Dongan Bridge, Guanxi, Hsinchu

Lee Chin-Hsien (1945-0)

Oil Painting

2005

Length:50 x Width:60.5 (cm)

This painting, Dongan Bridge, Guanxi, Hsinchu, was completed by Lee in 2005 at the age of 60. It is from his series on Taiwan's cultural landscapes. The focus is on the unique shape of this five-arch bridge. Natural and unrestrained brushstrokes were used to present this historical monument. The red hues of the sky and the blue waters of the river below the bridge piers form a contrast of warm and cold colors.
The Dongan Bridge was constructed in 1927, during the Japanese occupation era (1895-1945). Its completion drove the rise of the Guanxi area of Hsinchu County. Lee is skilled at depicting history, current events and people. After understanding the contribution of this early structure to this area, he decided to make the Dongan Bridge the subject of this painting, to provide those who view this painting a look back on this part
