Yuanshan Mansion depicted in this painting is better known today as the Taipei Story House. This English Tudor style building was constructed in 1914 for Tan Tiau-Chun, a tea merchant in the Dadaocheng area of Taipei. In this mansion, the Tan family entertained political and business dignitaries. After Tan's death, it passed through many hands. Following the end of World War II, it served as the residence of Huang Kuo-Shu, former Speaker of the Legislative Yuan. In 2003, Chen Kuo-Tzu adopted this building, providing the sponsorship to transform it into the Taipei Story House, which is devoted to the promotion of Taiwan's lifestyles and culture and the reuse of historical buildings.
Blue sky and white clouds serve as a clear boundary. Under the trees with bright red leaves is the sophisticated, elegant and tranquil Yuanshan Mansion. The focal points of this painting are the exterior walls and columns. This is a reminder to observers that they should not forget about this building, which is now located next to the more modern Taipei Fine Arts Museum. Both buildings are important arts and cultural exhibition spaces in Taipei and worth visiting.
