South Gate

Huang Kuo-Lung (1933-1996)

Oil Painting

Length:46 x Width:53.5 (cm)

Taipei's Nan Men (South Gate) is formally known as Li Zheng Gate. It was the main entrance to the once walled part of Taipei City, and the largest of Taipei's city gates. Next to it are the University of Taipei and Taiwan Tobacco & Liquor Corporation. It is one of the important landmarks of the area, as well as a national historic monument.
Under the sunshine, and blue sky with white puffy clouds, the artist painted this old city gate in ocher brushstroke by brushstroke. The luxuriant growth of the green shade trees reveals this monument in early summer. From the garden that encircles this old city gate, this scene greatly differs from that of today. Stand outside the walls of the University of Taipei to view this old city wall. Then, compare with this scene for an interesting contrast between past and present.
